Seven Sisters Hike: Seaford to Eastbourne

About This Event

The hike is about 13.5 miles with a 1761ft elevation gain from point to point. We'll be taking the 8.24am train from London Victoria to Seaford Sussex and 4.05pm return train from Eastbourne to London Victoria. Please book your own tickets. The Seven Sisters are a series of chalk cliffs stretching from Cuckmere Haven to Birling Gap. These brilliant white cliffs, topped with a carpet of green grass, and plunging into the cerulean sea along the English Channel are one of Southern England’s most striking landscapes. The best way to experience the Seven Sisters cliffs is by walking the coastal trail from Seaford to Eastbourne. The best place to start the 7 Sisters coastal trail is in Seaford as the views are more spectacular if you walk east. The coastal trail ascends from Seaford Beach to the Seaford Head Nature Reserve. For your safety always stay a good distance back from the edge. Chalk is very brittle, and these coastal cliffs are prone to crumbling. The walk continues to Hope Gap, where you can descend to the beach (during low tide). Next, the trail takes you to Cuckmere Haven. Cuckmere Beach is a wonderful spot to take a swim. The trail between Cuckmere Haven and Birling Gap has a series of 40-50 m soft ascents and descents as you make your way across the cliffs. Birling Gap is another wonderful spot for a swim. From Birling Gap, continue in the direction of Belle Tout Lighthouse. The next section of the Seven Sisters hike brings you to the lighthouse at Beachy Head. There’s a pub near Beachy Head, with indoor and outdoor seating. From Beachy Head, continue in the direction of Eastbourne. Take car after rain as the chalky ground can get very slippery when wet. Good boots with plenty of grip are recommended.
