About This Event

Christ was just a good moral teacher - The claim that Christ was just a good moral teacher is a common refrain of our 'spiritual but not religious' age. It rests on two assumptions: He is not God, and His moral teaching can be appreciated even if you think he is just an ordinary human being. In this talk, focusing primarily on the Synoptic Gospels, Fr John will argue that both of these assumptions are profoundly wrong. Christ claimed to be God, and if he is not God, then his teaching makes no sense. Fr John Church OP is a recently ordained Dominican priest based in Leicester, where he assists in the parish and coordinates the friars' province-wide 'Dominican Young Adults' ministry. He first encountered the Dominicans while studying in Oxford, and entered the novitiate in 2018. His vocation has been deeply influenced by many role models, particularly through his time working with the Missionaries of Charity. He loves to combine his preaching and study with a love of the outdoors. This is a part of our series titled: 'How to defend our Faith' which a series of talks and socials tackling big questions about Catholic faith and modern life. Each week dives into a different theme: from “Modern Science has disproved God” and “Christ was just a good moral teacher” to “The Bible is full of contradictions” and “You don’t need the Church to follow Jesus.” Alongside these, we’ll have adoration nights, socials, and community meals. It’s an open space to explore, question, and strengthen your faith together.
